In processes containing two distinct material phases, the interface between them may rise or fall as the process changes. A Dynatrol® interface level sensor is installed at the required detection point and provides an indication when the interface reaches that location.

This makes interface point detection useful for separation, process control, and monitoring applications where operators depend on yes/no indication at a defined position rather than a continuous profile of the entire vessel.

How Vibratory Interface Level Detection Works

Dynatrol® level probes operate using a vibratory sensing principle. The probe is driven at a characteristic vibration, and its response changes when the material surrounding the probe changes. Our electronic controls interpret that change to determine when the desired process condition has reached the sensor.

For interface applications, the sensor is positioned at the location where the boundary between the two process materials needs to be detected. When the material surrounding the probe changes from one phase to the other, the system provides a switching indication for process monitoring or control.

What is an interface level sensor?

An interface level sensor detects the boundary between two different process materials at a specific location, such as a solid and liquid or a liquid and liquid inteface. Our sensors will relay to plant engineers and operators when that interface rises to or falls below the predetermined point.

The Dynatrol® CL-10DJI uses a vibratory probe positioned at the desired interface detection point. When the material surrounding the probe changes, its vibrational response changes and the system provides a switching indication.

Our vibratory design does not rely on moving mechanical parts or electrical conductivity as the primary sensing principle. This makes it attractive for applications where a rugged point switch is preferred and the two process materials produce a detectable change in the probe’s vibrational response.

Dynatrol® has manufactured industrial vibratory level equipment since 1956, and its sensor architecture combines a rugged single probe with dedicated electronic controls. Our sensors include simple installation, no field adjustments, and decades of industrial use.

Do not choose a point interface sensor if you need continuous interface position throughout the vessel rather than detection at one fixed point. The two materials also need to create a sufficiently distinct sensor responses, which require one of our engineers to review your media and process conditions before a sensor can be installed.

No. The CL-10DJI is a point detection device, meaning it tells you when the interface reaches the installed sensor location. If the process requires a continuously changing interface measurement, another more expensive measurement technology may be appropriate.

Provide both process materials, expected temperature and pressure, vessel configuration, mounting location, and whether buildup, coating, turbulence or corrosion are concerns. Those factors help determine whether the sensor and materials of construction are appropriate.

The probes can operate at any attitude as long as it is held firmly at the process connection. This gives engineers flexibility when selecting the mounting position.

Dynatrol sensors have been installed in pipelines, small vessels and large process tanks. Recessed installation is acceptable as long as process fluid does not accumulate around the probe and make it appear continuously covered.

Highly viscous fluids can cling to or build up on a vibratory probe and cause it to appear continuously covered. If either interface material tends to coat, dry or build up on the probe, contact our engineering team before placing an order.

A Dynatrol® interface sensor is not recommended for high-vibration service. If significant external vibration is present at the mounting location, the application must be reviewed with our engineering team for process use.
